Between A Professor's Impeccable Grammar And A President's Impeccable Character - Maiwada Dammallam
In a well circulated interview, Farooq Kperogi, the randy American based ‘Professor’ was out, once again, with litany of childish accusations, imaginary allegations and clearly impossible questions against the person and character of President Muhammadu Buhari. If Kperogi is an American Rapper, I’m certain the lengthy interview would have been a song he will give the title ‘Pull Buhari Down or Die Trying’ without fear of being charged for plagiarising 50 Cent’s ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’. The similarities and desperation of the two songs was so strong.

Excerpt:

“As I said many times, Buhari ’s so-called anti – corruption fight is the most invidiously

selective , the least transparent , the most brazenly unjust , and the silliest joke in Nigeria ’s entire history. Here is a man who doesn’t give his corrupt political opponents the benefit of the doubt . He orders their arrest, jails them, and uses the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to smear them in the media on the basis of allegations, but tells astonishingly bald-faced and easily falsifiable lies to defend, deflect, minimise, and excuse the corruption of his close aides and political associates. You call that anti – corruption crusade? Please!”

Farooq Kperogi may say it a million times more, still the fact remains he is only enjoying his right for freedom to exercise his vocal cords as often as he wish regardless of result and value. Forget the heavy liability the exercise may inflict on his make-believe integrity and pseudo-patriotism, what is not contestable is the fact that he’s a man on a mission to self-destruct and I’m wishing him success – lots of it.

To the tissues of lies:

Morally speaking, if I may ask Kperogi, how does one gives ‘his corrupt political elements’ a benefit of doubt? In the case of President Buhari, is it by excusing people like former NSA Sambo Dasuki who was reasonably proved to be culpable of looting and sharing $2.8bn meant to defend the country by security agencies using certified records of transactions of beneficiary bank accounts and confessions of the ‘corrupt political elements’?

Is Kperogi’s luxury of ‘benefit of doubt’ suppose to be extended to fuel subsidy scammers who were equally proven by certified records to have sabotaged efforts to subsidize an essential commodity on which the life of the nation was/is dependant thereby successfully, fleecing the country of trillions of Naira meant to accommodate the welfare of the downtrodden by providing a little discount to their hardship? Most importantly, is this silly ‘benefit of doubt’ suppose to be blind to physical evidences like ‘living above means’, unjustifiable extravagance of the culprits and unjustifiable billions found in the possession of some of the culprits which was already retrieved? Please give me a break!

Allegations of the President covering his associates and aides or using Government agencies to harass his supposed opponents were just as silly. Incidentally, people like Kperogi who supported the candidature of President Buhari while angling for positions in his administration are the best proof to bust this lie. Probably they expected President Buhari to harass their perceived enemies – fight their personal wars while they sit back and defend any illegal action he may use to do so using their excellent oratorical skills and media contact. They were disappointed!

It was expected that after taking charge President Buhari will sack all political appointees and create spaces to reward his supporters. He didn’t do that. Against their expectations he opted to respect civil service rules and observe laid down procedures – picking only those in position of authority who proved innate inability to blend and operate in the new administration on its terms hence, heaven must fall!

why was it lost to Kperogi, a false claimant to morality that it’s not the duty of the President to instruct EFCC or any agency with statutory responsibility to investigate financial or social crimes on who or who not to arrest, detain and prosecute? If his idea of responsibilities of the President was so reversely warped, why’s he not blaming the President for ‘ordering’ the arrest, detention and prosecution (or remaining as awaiting trials for ages) of millions of petty thieves languishing in countless prisons and holding cells mostly for a lot less than what could put a single meal on the table for their families. Is this emergency ‘human right activist’ blind to the plight of these petty criminals because they cannot afford high priced lawyers and compromised media experts to fight for their rights?

Now, which media has President Buhari used to smear his imaginary enemies? Certainly not the same hostile media concocting and propagating libellous stories about him, sometimes going as far as writing his ‘obituary’ while at other times flagrantly and shamelessly going over the boundaries of decency to mock and celebrate the death of his daughter in a senseless manner that won’t be acceptable even in the animal kingdom. If President Buhari could manipulate the sentiment and behaviour of the media in as easy manner as projected above, I doubt if a home based (much less a cyber-tourist) media ‘activist’ could have access to the media for ceaseless, baseless and useless attacks against the President on issues sometimes as less as what colour of shoes he wears to an event.

If President Buhari will go so low as to use ‘bald-faced, easily falsifiable lies’ to defend any of his associates, the gone-berserk, rebounding and ricocheting ‘Professor’ need to tell Nigerians why President Buhari refused to extend same courtesy to Col. Jafaar Isa (rtd), his close associate, a leading member of his Transition team and a senior member of his Party who was detained by EFCC on suspicion of involvement in the arms-deal and was only released after depositing part of the money traced to his account as FFK and other notable suspects were released after making part-refunds. Is it not clear that someone is blind to logic and on fault-searching just to smear the President for personal reasons?

Nigerians would be consoled that no matter how flowery and beautiful grammar could be, it remains nothing but noise meant only for entertainment if it’s empty of facts and logic. Nigerians have gone through millions of people who lost out to political permutations that it’s very easy for them to identify a limping frog, a dull turkey and a rampaging ‘Professor’ in revenge mission.

In his usual peremptoriness Kperogi claimed he coined (he even attached date for the discovery) ‘clueless’ and made it Jonathan’s middle name  – a claim he made with more pomposity and air of success than Christopher Columbus did for discovering America. I think we should clap for Kperogi for this wonderful contribution to humanity. It’s beyond me to argue childish claims about who started using a well established word to describe a suiting scenario even when I can easily prove the usage of the word to describe Jonathan’s misadventure by many people long before the ‘date of manufacture’ attached to the word by the American ‘Professor’. Still, let’s massage his ego by clapping for him. It won’t cost us anything.

Rather than waste time laying claim for the patent of the word ‘clueless’, I think Kperogi could use his time better by concentrating on the threat facing American Green Card holders. President Trump is a much bigger problem to Kperogi than President Buhari. With the manner he’s going about shipping out green card holders, Trump may soon ship back Kperogi back to Nigeria and give him a chance to invest his political expertise and know-it-all to make a better name than President Buhari. It doesn’t matter if he will do his experiments with his home LG, Nigerians will scale down the yardstick and judge him using his level. Until then, he remains just an entertaining irritant!
