Honest surpirse: Frances Ciunningham with the letter

Frances Cunningham received a cheque and a handwritten letter, saying: “I’m very, very sorry.”

The note said: “I did not realise the seriousness of my actions at the time. I had been through a lot. I am so ashamed and sad because of the fear it may have induced.”

The woman, who Frances has not named, said she was not the main person behind the 1992 break-in,

when a cigarette machine was “smashed up”, but admitted: “I was there and I went in.”

Married mum-of-three Frances, in her 60s, said she “vaguely” remembered the burglary at the Swettenham Arms in Congleton, Cheshire.

Forgiving the woman, she said: “It has obviously been eating away at her – it’s sad.”
