A MEXICAN woman has been jailed for 30 years after neglecting her baby daughter so badly that she was eaten by ants.
Mariana Lizeth Salas Hernandez, 20, ignored her infant daughter Luna Estefania to such an extent that childcare workers found her paralysed after a fall and unable to escape the insects.
The 18-month-old died later in “agonising pain” at hospital in a case has shocked residents in the southern Mexican city of Chihuahua.
According to investigators, Hernandez simply did not take care of the toddler.
For 15 days at the end of April and beginning of May 2014, she did not feed her.
Luna had also been paralysed in a fall thought to have occurred as a result of her mother’s lack of attention.
Investigators discovered that the child had previously suffered a severe blow to the head when she was approximately two months old, although it could not be determined what had caused it.
Police and childcare officials were alerted to the case by a neighbour who told them Luna was spending too much time without adult attention.
Inspectors found her in a severe state of malnourishment and covered by ants. The insects had reportedly already eaten parts of the infant.
Authorities immediately placed the girl in a hospital but she died two months later in what doctors described as “agonising pain”.
Mariana Lizeth Salas Hernandez has since been convicted of murder and been sentenced to 30 years in prison. She was also fined the equivalent of £9,456.
