A GERMAN plane set for Canada had to be diverted after a man desperate for a cigarette tried to open the cabin door at 38,000 feet.
The Lufthansa flight from Munich to Vancouver was forced to make an emergency landing in Hamburg because of the incident.
The man initially tried to light a cigarette on board the Airbus A340-600 but was stopped by cabin crew.
When he realised that he could not smoke on the plane, he started to scream and shout.
The irate passenger then tried to open a cabin door while the plane was in the air.
Thankfully, cabin crew managed to stop the man before he could open the door at 38,000 feet.
The subdued man was escorted off the plane when the aircraft touched down in Hamburg.
He was taken to a psychiatric facility where he was diagnosed with a mental disorder.
Police are not investigating the incident at the moment.
